Police arrest a student at a demonstration in central Cape Town

The protest was against Republic Day celebrations set for the next day and police broke up the protest. A policeman grapples with demonstrating University of Cape Town (UCT) students in central Cape Town. Students hang on to a student the policeman was attempting to arrest. Five people were arrested.

320 policemen, fully armed with guns, recruited in Cape Town's black townships, had their passing out parade in Cape Town after only six weeks in training. They will return to patrol the townships as part of the South African government's response to the growing militant resistance to the state's apartheid structures.

Police seige of COSATU headquarters

Police lay siege to the headquarters of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in central Johannesburg. Police claimed they were searching for 3 ANC members allegedly hiding in the building. The building and the surrounding area were sealed off for over 6 hours and the press denied access under emergency regulations. Johannesburg 22 April 1987. Photographer at the time did not want credit for this photograph probably for protection.
