Hodgson, MT

MT Hodgson and his wife were in debt and signed an agreement with debt management company Germiston Makelaars to manage their debt repayments. After paying fees to the company they found that no payments were being made. The LRC assisted them to recover money. Material includes summons for outstanding accounts and a statement by Mrs Hodgson.

Mphahlele, J

J Mphahlele approached Pyramid Credit Control to pay off his accounts on an administration basis. He paid them R50. Several months went by and they had made no payments on his behalf. They demanded more money which he refused. They in turn refused to give his R50 back. They then obtained a judgement against him, which his employer paid in full. He then approached the LRC to have the judgement rescinded. His application was successful.

The client joined African Friend Benefit Association in 1972 and over the next 8 years paid them a premium of R1 per month in exchange for inter alia funeral benefits. The client then learned that African Friend Benefit Association had closed his account for no reason. The LRC brought a suit to claim back the R94 paid in premiums, plus interest. The court granted an order to this effect.

Clients of JMM Investments

JM Mokitimi ran an investment company that promised to double money invested in 3 to 12 weeks. The company was based in Lesotho but operated in SA. When clients claimed their investment, they were not paid. The LRC tried to intervene, but since the company operated in Lesotho they briefed lawyers there to issue summons. However, JMM Investments went into liquidation, and no-one was repaid. Includes press clippings from Drum magazine and Sowetan.
