The Cape has not yet experienced economic improvement.
Provincial election results show the South African Party to be on the decline. Malan is attempting to destroy the coalition because of the weakness shown by Hertzog and Havenga in dealing with the Malan faction. Smuts and Duncan will acquiesce in the swamping of the English element in the coalition government. Chaplin feels that the Unionist Party should be reconstituted. Recounts a meeting with authoress S.G. Millin on board ship.
