Letter signed by Sol Plaatje, written to Major Cooke, Director of Native Labour in Johannesburg, 17 January 1931, appealing for funds to help publish 'native literature'. The letter was found in Mhudi, Lovedale, 1930.

The papers contain items relating to Scully's wife Nora, children and his in-laws, the Richards family of 1820 settler stock. Correspondence, mainly family, is personal but includes comments on his literary ambitions, work as a magistrate and topics of the day.
