The Papers comprise personal documents, correspondence and press clippings as well as material on political, social, economic and religious issues in South Africa from the 1960 up to 2007. There are documents on gun control in South Africa, the death penalty, human rights, peace and non-violence, communities projects, womens and youth programmes, local government elections and the role of the South African Church during the apartheid era.

The papers illustrate Sheena Duncans important contribution in church and social matters. She donated this collection to Historical Papers in 2006.

Dirk Coetzee, Testimony

Hitsquads. Testimony of a South African Security Policeman: the full story, by Dirk Coetzee

The testimony was written by Dirk Coetzee in exile, at the ANC Headquarters in Lusaka and in London, with the help of his brother Ben Coetzee. The main body was completed in 1990, and was spell checked and reprinted by Ben Coetzee in 1994.

Dirk Coetzee's testimony would also form part of the submissions to the Harms Commission of Inquiry, which he gave in London.

Robert Sobukwe, letters

This small collection contains four original letters of Robert Sobukwe, written between November 1964 and March 1965 to Mrs Sally Spilhaus. She was at that time working as a secretary of the Defence and Aid Fund in Cape Town, IDAF, raising funds for the legal defence of political detainees. Robert Sobukwe at that time was a political prisoner on Robben Island. The exchanged letters touch on personal issues.

Papers of Shunmugam Nganasamantham Chetty

The papers mainly include documents relating to Shun Chetty's professional activities as an attorney in Johannesburg and Durban during the apartheid era as well as documents relating to the striking off Mr Chetty from the roll of attorneys. There are also documents concerning Mr Chetty's applications to the High Court of South Africa for his reinstatement as an attorney. This collection was lodged in Historical Papers by S. Chetty's wife Dr Fazila (Varachia) Chetty in 2008.

Oral interviews conducted by Dr. Catherine Higgs, University of Tennessee, during the period of 2005-2006, for the project "Faith, Politics and Resistance: Catholic Nuns in Apartheid South Africa". The project relates experiences of Catholics during the Apartheid era in South Africa from 1948-1994, and will be released in book form under the (working) title "Sisters for Justice: Catholic Women Religious in Apartheid South Africa".

The interviews are available on CD, there are currently no transcripts. The researcher included signed Release forms and Deed of gift forms for each person interviewed.

The collection includes various materials relating to the first South African Democratic Elections in 1994 and the Local and National Elections of 1996 and 1999, as well as the South African transition to democracy and the country's New Constitution. The documents also illustrate the Boipatong Massacre of 1992, TRC submissions and reports, human rights and racial issues, political parties in South Africa, HIV/AIDS in this country, research material used by O'Malley for publishing a book on Mac Maharaj including tapes, CDS and transcripts of interviews with many prominent South Africans. This collection was donated to Historical Papers by Padraig O'Malley in 2008.

The collections contains the compiled set of memorabilia and edited letters, which John A Fulton had sent home during his gold mining career in Nevada, Columbia and later Cape Town, Rhodesia and the Johannesburg Rand, between 1898 and 1906.

Volumes I-III in hard copy, colour, spiral bound; Volumes I-IV on DVD; bibliographical sketch of JA Fulton.

The volumes, through Fulton's letters, not only provide an insight into mining management and practices at the time, but also contain research, carried out by the editors of the volumes, on labour issues in the mines, mining personalities, the Boer War (1899-1902) and other matters current during that period. Intended for educational use it offers a valuable insight into the Rand mines and their, what Fulton called "most advanced mining methods in the world" at the turn of the 20th century.
