Guide to the Historical Papers Collections

This Guide provides an overview of all collections at the Historical Papers Research Archive, excluding the archive of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa, which has its own Guide. The descriptions are provided on Fonds level.

The collections housed at Historical Papers include diaries, letters, memoranda, reports, minute-books, press clippings, pamphlets, photographs, drawings, oral interviews, trial transcripts and financial, legal and personal documents.

This collection consists of correspondence and memoranda to and from the South African Institute of Race Relations. The principal correspondents are: Quintin Whyte and F.J. Van Wyk, while others include M. Horrell, W.B. Ngakane and D. Rheinallt Jones.

Subjects covered are the social and economic conditions of Black South Africans, with particular reference to education, land, farm labour, labour relations, housing, township conditions, health, welfare, liquor, discriminatory legislation and penal reform.

In this newsletter, there are five poetry sections, namely Dead roots, Apology from London by Arthur Nortje, Miles of many fears by Bachana wa Mokwena, A prayer for Africa from the mouths of babies by Mandlenkosi Langa and I surrender by Thele Moema. Other section is the art review of the film by Mongane Serote called 'The wild Geese'. Medu's views on burning current issues in South Africa are included, interview by Bachan wa Mokwena interviewing Teresa Devant de Gonzalez regarding the theatre and the role of an artist in an oppressive system. Lastly, there are featured articles by Molefe Pheto, Phetu Serote and Timothy Williams.
