Shocked Progressive Federal Party (PFP) workers react to the news of the loss of another PFP constituency to the National Party (NP) as results were broadcast over national television. A team of 5 runners left from near Pollsmoor prison at the start of a relay scheduled to end at a Gugulethu Sports Stadium as part of the Mandela 70th birthday celebrations. However the runners were arrested shortly before arriving in Wynberg. Police and military also sealed off the Stadium in Gugulethu and prohibited the sporting events which were due to take place there.
