Split in the ranks of the union after the passing of the Industrial Conciliation Act and the formation of the Garment Trade Union of European Employees (SA) or Klerevakbond van Blankewerkers (SA). The White workers felt that the provisions of the act would make it impossible for mixed unions to operate. Sannie van Wyk, as Provisional General Secretary of the new union informed the Central Executive Committee of the decision. The Central Executive Committee in the interest of the union finally decided to support the formation of separate unions and to form a federation of the trade union to ensure co-operation and consultation on industrial agreements and working conditions.
