TRC Oral History Project

  • ZA SAHA AL2985
  • Fonds
  • 2003 - 2004

Although 65 interviews were conducted for this project, only 63 interviews are available, as two interviews were not recorded properly. Interview protocol differed slightly depending on the interviewer and when the interview was scheduled. In cases where questions in the general protocol were unrelated to the specific work of the person being profiled, questions more appropriate to the work of the individual were posed.

This collection is accessible at Historical Papers (HP) Archive as collection A2985. To consult this collection contact Historical Papers at University of the Witwatersrand. (http://www.historicalpapers.wits.ac.za/)

  • 1997

The records that comprise this collection are written submissions and transcribed testimonies of approximately thirty faith communities that were either presented to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) “Special Hearings: Faith Communities” that were held in East London from 17 to 19 November 1997 or which were a response to the letter of invitation sent to the faith communities by the TRC on 27 May 1997.''

Materials collected from TRC Archival Audit.

The TRC Archival Audit

Between 2003 and 2006, SAHA and Historical Papers, University of Witwatersrand embarked on a project to locate, retrieve and make available records relating to the South African Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC). The project entailed conducting an archival audit of all existing TRC records in order to identify and locate documentation in danger of being lost.

In the process of conducting the archival audit, SAHA and HP located many collections from individuals and organizations that participated in the TRC process, including this collection. Selections from these materials as well as TRC related material found in the freedom of Information Collection and other pre-existing SAHA and HP collections, were digitized and can be accessed online at http://truth.wwl.wits.ac.za/

Transvaal Indian Congress (TIC) Collection

  • ZA SAHA AL2563
  • Fonds
  • 1981 - 1991

This is the official collection of the (revived) TIC. The bulk of the material comes from the TIC offices, which included the records of the Transvaal Anti-SAIC Committee. The collection therefore spans the period 1981-1991. The material from the 1960s was also at the TIC offices, having been deposited there by Dr Essop Jassat in the mid 1980s.

The TIC also had extensive UDF documentation, which was removed from this collection and added to the UDF Collection (AL2431) to make that collection complete, and to avoid duplication. In 1987 the TIC undertook a major survey of Indian political attitudes in the Transvaal. This was done under the auspices of Dr. David Webster, Wits University under the specially created Community Resource Group.

State vs. P.W. Botha and Appeal Collection

  • ZA SAHA AL3060
  • Fonds
  • 1986 - 1998

The materials that make up this collection constitute the records of proceedings of the case of The State v. PW Botha in its entirety as well as a small selection of documents from the subsequent appeal.

The records of The State v. PW Botha are divided into 36 volumes, individually bound. The combined list of contents is bound in a separate volume (item #37). The Heads of Argument as well as the Appendix to the Heads of Argument form separate unbound items (items # 38.1 and 38.2).

Although records of proceedings of the appeal, PW Botha vs. The State are in the custody of the Cape Town High Court, the inclusion of the Judgment of the Appeal serves to complement the existing collection and is also included (item 39.1.3).

Stan Winer Collection

  • ZA SAHA AL2947
  • Fonds
  • 1981 - 2000

The collection includes a manuscript written by Winer dealing with south African covert operations. This work proposes that the human rights records of the former South African regime should not be judged in isolation of the Cold War, and the Western Society of nations, of which South Africa was a part. Newspaper clippings relating to South African state-sponsored death squads , train violence, and other covert actions perpetrated by the South African government compliment the collection. Another series worth noting is the documentation relating to civil litigation by Stan Winer and others in the British High Court, concerning the defamatory book "Inside BOSS" (Penguin: London, 1981) by Gordon Winter, a self-styled defector from the bureau of State Security. This series includes primary and photocopied documents dealing with "Inside BOSS", together with photographs from the Dutch edition and a comprehensive collection of newspaper clippings concerning the case.

  • ZA SAHA AL2808

South African Youth Congress (SAYCO) Collection

  • ZA SAHA AL2425
  • Fonds
  • 1987 - 1990

These documents received by SAHA from SAYCO Head Office are not the complete archives of SAYCO. It is doubtful if records of the period before 1990 were kept or even exist at all given the repressive conditions of the period. Thus, this collection has documents mainly from 1990. This is a small collection, comprising of 3 archival boxes.

South African Tin Workers' Union (SATWU) Collection

  • ZA SAHA AL2420
  • Fonds
  • 1937 - 1978

The collection is very small, 0.3 linear metres. SAHA received it as part of the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) collection, but it is clear that it constitutes an archive in its own and was added to the NIC collection by mistake.
