Volume 1 contains copies of the correspondence of the Social Democratic Federation from 1909 September 30 - 1910 February 25 and the Cape Federation of Labour Unions from 1919 January 27 - 1920 January 10. The other 4 volumes are all Capt. ' Federation of Labour Unions. The letters are signed by H McManus and Dr A W Caporn, Honorary Secretaries, and A Black, Assistant Honorary Secretary of the Social Democratic Federation, and by H Stuart, Secretary first of the Social Democratic Federation and than of the Cape Federation of Labour Unions.

The letters are to individual unions and federations, such as the South African Industrial Federation and the Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union, cabinet ministers and government officials, Cape Town City Council, municipal employees and the Chamber of Commerce, editors of newspapers, political portion and the following individuals:
