Biographical and administrative history: The National Convention of South Africa was a result of the South Africa Act which was passed by the British Parliament leading to the proclamation of the Union of South Africa on the 31 May 1910. The Rt. Hon. John Henry de Villiers, a Cape lawyer and judge, became the first Chief Justice for the Union of South Africa.
