Archival history

Note: While I was collecting the Papers of Andrew Geddes Bain, some of which was edited by me, were published by the Van Riebeeck Society, Cape Town, 1940, vol. 30, my cousin. Donald Bain, great grandson of Andrew Geddes Bain, allowed me to copy the geological correspondence which had been given to him by A. G. Bain's daughter Margaret, with permission to make use of it.

A few years later Donald Bain sold these letters, to the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where I believe they now form part of the Africana Collection.

The Atherstone - Bain geological correspondence would be a valuable addition to the documents listed below, and possibly is still in existence, (See page 116, Part 2.) I have tried unsuccessfully to trace the file which may have been destroyed with other Atherstone papers.

Anyone wishing to quote from letters listed as being in the possession of the University of the Witwatersrand must apply for permission before using.
