Institutionele geschiedenis

The Anglican Church of Southern Africa, previously known as the Church of the Province of Southern Africa, is the province of the Anglican Communion in Southern Africa. Its primate is the Archbishop of Cape Town. The church includes dioceses in present day South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Angola, Lesotho, Swaziland and St. Helena.

An agreement was signed in 1937 between the Church of the Province of South Africa (CPSA) - now known as the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA) - and the University of the Witwatersrand, whereby the church's central record library was places on loan with the University. The library consisted of books, pamphlets, periodicals and manuscripts. The richness of the Anglican Church's manuscript collection is due to the efforts of the provincial archivists appointed by the church to collect material and transfer it to the university. The first, 1937-1957, was Father Osmund Victor, followed by Canon Cecil Thomas Wood from 1958-1979. Mrs AR Kotze then took over from 1979-2000, until Carol Archibald was appointed as Provincial Archivist in 2001.

Inhoud en structuur

Bereik en inhoud

Included are diary extracts, correspondence, personal and family documents, notes and miscellaneous papers, press clippings and printed works.

The papers are predominantly of family interest but there are occasional comments of a social or political nature, pertaining to South Africa, and a some concern the Anglican Church in South Africa, including the controversies which nearly split the church asunder such as the Gray - Colenso and Meaman - Williams disputes and the Third Proviso Agitation, all of which played their part in determining the relationship between the Church of the Province of South Africa and the Church of England.

There are a number of interesting documents relating to Badnall's ecclesiastical offices, containing the seals of Bishops Gray and West Jones of Cape Town.

Biographical and administrative history: He was a friend end close Associate of Bishop Gray and undoubtedly was of help to him in framing a constitution for the Anglican Church in South Africa, His clearness of expression made him an influential speaker and as an orator he was rated highly by Saul Solomon. He was involved in the church controversies of the time, including the "Third Proviso", which made the ecclesiastical courts in South Africa independent. In the synod of 1883 he strongly attacked the Third Proviso but was unsuccessful in having it removed. In to ill health he retired in 1885 and returned to England.
